According to an October report by the American Immigration Council, U.S. industries such as construction and agriculture heavily rely on undocumented labor, with 13–14% of their workforce composed of individuals who entered the country illegally. In hospitality, the figure is about 7.1%.

The report notes that jobs less favored by U.S. workers—such as meat processing, kitchen cleaning, and hotel maintenance—are often filled by undocumented employees. In 2022, over one-third of plasterers, stucco masons, drywall installers, and roofers were undocumented, along with roughly one-quarter of construction laborers, agricultural workers, and housekeeping staff. The study warns that large-scale deportations could disrupt these industries and trigger broader economic ripple effects.

Other sectors with high shares of undocumented workers include wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, and manufacturing. Overall, the U.S. has an estimated 7.5 million undocumented workers, representing 4.6% of the national workforce—despite making up only 3.3% of the total population, as they are disproportionately of working age.
