Non-U.S. citizens are more than three times as likely to have their electronic devices inspected at the U.S. border compared to U.S. passport holders. According to data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, of the 47,047 electronic device searches conducted during fiscal year 2024, spanning October 1, 2023, through September 30, 2024, 36,506 involved non-U.S. citizens, while 10,541 involved U.S. citizens.

Overall, such searches remain relatively uncommon. Of the approximately 421 million travelers processed at U.S. ports of entry last year, only about 0.011 percent had their electronic devices examined. Ports of entry include international airports, land border crossings by road or rail, and major seaports—locations where travelers are legally permitted to enter the United States.

The visual below shows the total border searches of international travelers’ electronic devices at U.S. ports of entry.
